Checking Things Off Our Bucket List

I was hungover this morning when Ash texted about doing brunch in Sausalito. We have this bucket list of things to do around the Bay, and brunch at Le Garage is one that Ash has wanted to check off for a while.

It was good, but maybe not worth crossing a bridge for. I've had better croque madames, and Diego and Ash's burgers were juicy but not too tasty. At least the coffee cleared up my hangover.

One of the things I love about Ash is how directly and cleanly she deals with things. A few days ago she told me she had something to talk about. I thought she wanted to chat about copywriting vs. graphic design. On the drive back to SF, I made a joke about one of her friends.

"So, that's actually what I wanted to talk about," she said. "I really don't like it when you say things like that."

Without being aware of it, I had taken a joke too far, more than a few times, and it had gotten offensive. She was right. I apologized, and said I would cut it out. And Ash accepted that.

There was this moment, right after we dropped off Diego to get ready for his date, when it could have gotten awkward.

"So… it's just us…" she said, looking over at me in the passenger seat. "Still wanna hit up the biergarten?"

And she meant it. We spent the rest of the afternoon eating our way through Hayes Valley. I'd bought Ash brunch a few weeks ago so she bought steins. After soaking up sun at the Biergarten (Also on the list. Check.), we poked our heads into a pop-up craft & design museum and got Smitten Ice Cream – Earl Grey and Cinnamon Toast with chocolate nibs (Check). The we stopped into Fatted Calf and added something to the list: Wednesday night Pork Happy Hour.

That's hard to find in a friend: someone to call you out when you're being a jackass, and forgive you when you own up to it. And then buy you a beer!
