Interviews and First Dates: "It Just Clicks"

If I've been slacking on this blog this month (and I admit I have), if I've needed more downtime than usual lately, it's because I've been making a lot of first impressions. I've been interviewing kids for my summer internship and I've been going on a few first dates. Both can be fun, but they can also be emotionally draining.

The other thing interviews and first dates have in common is that you can't always explain why you pick one person over the other. I was hanging out with my cousin's friends Saturday – all college seniors – and told them I'd been doing a lot of interviews. I told them some horror stories but also said I met some standout potential candidates.

"What makes somone standout?" one of the kids asked. "What should you do on an interview to make a good impression?"

That's actually a question for my other blog. The professional blog on my freelancer website. But the answer, most of the time, is sometimes it just clicks. And sometimes it doesn't.

On and interview and on a first date, you're just looking for someone who you want to spend a lot of time with, either at work or, well... after hours.

Diego and Ash have been teasing a lot about "hiring an intern" for ulterior motives. The Starr Report comes to mind...

I usually just look away in a huff. I'm looking for a professional, I protest, not a plaything.

But actually, dating has more in common with interviewing. Like, you often know in the first 15 minutes if the person is worth considering or not. Sometimes it just clicks.
