Stop Whining

i always thought this was an Agatha Christie quote, but I guess it's actually Margaret Atwood who said it:

Writing is work. It's also gambling. You don't get a pension plan. Other people can help you a bit, but essentially you're on your own. Nobody is making you do this: you chose it, so don't whine.

i read that in an article on "10 tips for writing fiction" Corin sent me a couple years ago, when i 1st moved to SF.

the problem is my work work is writing, so i really don't think of this blog as a relaxing hobby, like Diego strumming on his guitar or St. Francis crafting.

But I chose it, so stop whining.

i like writing this blog, and i don't want to give up creative writing to make it as a freelancer. you wanna write, but to quote Kidnergarten Cop again, "You lack discipline."

in the same article Neil Gaiman gives his 10 tips. His first three, in order, are:

  1. Write.
  2. Put one word after another. Find the right word, put it down.
  3. Finish what you're writing. Whatever you have to do to finish it, finish it.

Whatever you have to do. that's the key. to finish this blog, to keep writing, i'm gonna try and make it more fun; less like work.

Hence the carefree capitalization. a lot of what i do all day long for work work is proofread, so i'm going to try for more of an e e cummings approach to this blog -- or at least a tween texting approach to style n grammar.

let's see how this plays.
